Checking In

originally written September 20, 2014

We should catch up sometime this weekend!

It’s a simple phrase we all say to people in our life. For some people that we didn’t expect to see a decade later, this makes a lot of sense.

However, for those we care to hold on to, it sounds a lot different than saying:

We should check in sometime this weekend!

It’s amazing, what one verb + adverb combination can change about a sentence.

I found myself saying ‘catch up’ with my buddies, when I realized that it doesn’t really describe the reality of our relationship. It specifically leaves out the intent to catch up again regularly in the future.

So I try to choose my words more carefully now.

To say what I truly mean.
